Sodium alginate is a cell wall component of marine brown algae, and contains approximately 30 to 60% alginic acid. Sodium alginate is a gum. The conversion of alginic acid to sodium alginate allows its solubility in water, which assists its extraction.
Alginate is used as an ingredient in various medical preparations to inhibit gastroesophageal reflux. and its is used in topical agents such as skin wound dressings to promote healing.
