Genestra Brands™ has written a statement addressing the safety of their glandular formulas and the potential risk of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), also known as "Mad Cow Disease".
BSE is one of a group of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that affects the nervous system of cattle. Although BSE-infected cattle may be suspected based on clinical signs and symptoms, a diagnosis can only be confirmed by microscopic examination of brain tissues taken from the deceased animal. Scientists believe that the spread of this disease in cattle is caused by feeding material from infected cattle or sheep back to other cattle. Both the Canadian Food and Drugs Regulations and the US Code of Federal Regulations have identified Specified Risk Materials (SRMs) as ingredients that have an increased risk of BSE. Currently Seroyal uses two such ingredients, pituitary and hypothalamus. However, these two ingredients are only identified as specified risk materials if they come from cattle aged 30 months or older. We receive documentation with each lot certifying that these ingredients are derived from cattle less than 30 months of age at the time of slaughter, therefore reducing the potential for BSE contamination, as TSE infectivity accumulates in bovine animals over an incubation period of several years. As well, these ingredients are sourced from Argentina or New Zealand bovine, countries identified by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) as having negligible-BSE risk.
