Vitamin E, a peroxyl radical scavenger, is the major lipid-soluble component in the cell antioxidant defense system and is exclusively obtained from the diet. Plants synthesize eight forms of vitamin E from homogentisic acid, namely the alpha, beta, gamma, and delta classes of tocopherol and tocotrienol. Although each of these molecules is a peroxyl radical scavenger, the human body seems to have a particular affinity for alpha-tocopherol.

Vitamin E, in general, has been shown for its potential benefits for cardiovascular health and its role in the development of different types of cancer.
