With a long history of medicinal use in the Far East, andrographis is listed in the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China, which enumerates its traditional use indications as influenza with fever, sore throat, acute or chronic cough, colitis, dysentery, and urinary tract infection.

In the light of repeated clinical trials herbalist Peter Holmes summarizes that andrographis “has emerged as one of China’s foremost immune stimulating anti-infective remedies for a large variety of bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections.”

The following uses of this herb are supported by clinical trials: “Prophylaxis and symptomatic treatment of upper respiratory infections, such as the common cold and uncomplicated sinusitis; bronchitis and pharyngotonsillitis; lower urinary tract infections; and acute diarrhoea.”

A study concluded that andrographis treatment “can significantly shorten the course and duration of the common cold.”

Administration:

30-60 drops (1-2ml), three times daily, in a little of water, on an empty stomach.

Contraindications and Cautions:

Consult a health care practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Do not use if pregnant or if you are an organ transplant recipient.

Tinctures are more readily absorbed by the body and have a high degree of bio-availability. As well, they have a long shelf life.

Sometimes people ask us why tinctures are alcohol-based. There are very good reasons. Alcohol is critically important in the extraction of an herb's medicinal ingredients. It also helps to stabilize and preserve them. Alcohol is the ideal carrier substance, conveying the therapeutic goodness of the herb to the body. In itself, too, science has proven that alcohol enhances the immune system and its defences.

As for the amount of alcohol taken in an average dose of tincture, you'll be surprised to learn that it's about the same as what you'd find in an overly ripe banana!

Tinctures remain the most practical way to take advantage of the amazing, health-giving power of herbs.
